As an Architect of thirty years, an investor, past Commerce Secretary, and financial consultant to many developers, I continue to promote the entrepreneurial needs of our Midwest States. I started my first business in high school – design and construction – and I was mentored by my Father and a group of his partners and friends. This type of mentorship is critical to continue to promote our Midwest region growth and new ideas for employment. Wisconsin, Minnesota, Iowa and Illinois all have entrepreneurial networks that are important to support. Our regional success will create a long term impact for economic growth. The stronger the region, the better the Midwest will compete within the nation and across the globe. This will grow our economy and the States will prosper over time. Most of our Midwest States’ leaders are strong supporters of entrepreneurial development, however more funding and company leadership needs to be involved for long term impact and success. New business creates new processes, products and services that open new markets for the Midwest. Regional collaboration is an important economic development tool and we are wise to support and promote these individual ideas. Regional centers in each state, such as colleges, technical schools and intake centers, all promote the new ideas. Bureaus of entrepreneurship should continue to be promoted to help excite, message and promote the accomplishments of our creative inventors and investors across our Midwest states. Attracting investments and support to high tech startup companies is important for continued growth ...

By Jack L. Fischer AIA Economic Development Professionals (EDP) have begun to understand the changing trends since 2007 and the need to balance responsibilities to communities and citizens with the visions, expectations and goals of developers. This trend toward cooperation and support is gaining momentum in many verticals and markets and represents important collaborative opportunities for planning and community growth. Looking back at the past five years shows a national recovery that has been much slower than after previous recessions. Many are predicting that 2014 will bring a real estate recovery that will move through economic and real estate cycles, and that this momentum will finally make a lasting difference in the building and facility markets. With this data and improved prospects for profitability, EDP are working to collaborate and provide a more “developer-friendly” interaction. Unlike older models where Request For Proposals were filled with so many demands and guidelines that businesses and developers could not participate without spending excessive cash and time, the new models of community cooperation embrace innovation and a team spirit to focus on a vision and mission aimed at fast-paced, sustainable growth. We applaud these changing attitudes as they can help revitalize community development in every dimension. Communities that embrace this alignment and teaming environment will flourish at a greater pace as compared to communities using older, more intrusive models for development. This does not mean we should eliminate appropriate due diligence, but we can help to facilitate end results as a team and restore ...

By Jack L. Fischer, AIA As an Architect of thirty years, an investor, past Commerce Secretary, and financial consultant to many developers, I continue to be aware of several needs in a number of important initiatives. Briefly, Wisconsin and other Midwest states are working hard to launch programs that help to grow and foster jobs and ease the complications of new developments. Today, more than ever, with the demands and complications of financing due to new bank regulations, a streamlined work process with all parties involved is critical to improve success. At Engberg Anderson Architects (EA), we promote an alignment process for all parties when we work with our clients. This critical foundation and teaming approach ensures from the onset a productive and successful result for all parties and clients. We observe many good things underway in the majority of Midwestern states, including simplifying and streamlining regulations, repealing some of the taxes on job creation, upgrading available economic tools, and reinforcing business, university, and technical school collaboration. All of these efforts help investors and developers bring about growth in the Midwest by adding new energy and new jobs. In Wisconsin, our home state, many of the traditional industries define our heritage and will be critical in strengthening our future. At the same time, major new sectors including manufacturing, biotechnology, medical device manufacturing, medical healthcare systems, and world-renowned research – just to name a few – are advancing the cause and this demand generates new opportunities for developers. All of this ...
